In light of recent activities in the US. Once again Black people are reminded of just how little power we have in this country. As everyone knows the Jena 6 protests and support rallies took place last week. The issue is that there should not have to be any such activities taking place in this day and age. The situation down there in Louisiana is as bad as it has ever been. The mentality of the people down there is the same as it has always been. These white kids hung nooses from a tree on the school grounds in order to send a message to the black kids. And this was viewed as a prank. At what point do we stop being the clowns?
It is hard to imagine that in this day and time people still have the mindset that we are less than people. I know some of you may find it hard to swallow that last comment but the proof is in the pudding. In W.Va the young black woman who was kidnapped and tortured by six whites. Is being ignored by the DOJ. The feds released a statement saying that they would not pursue the case because it was not a hate crime. The menatlity behind this is that the Hate crime carries a lesser charge than the kidnapping and the torture. My argument here is why not hit them with each and every law punishable in the case. They wanted to send a message to the US about killing dogs so they pursue M. Vick with everything they had. So why not set and example here and let people know that these types of crimes will not be tolerated. Why because honestly a black woman is worth less than a dog!
This type of torture and treatment of blacks is nothing new. Many people may know about the Emmitt Till case in 1955. A case where a young black child was tortured and killed for supposedly saying "bye baby" to a white woman while visiting his relatives in Mississippi. The Defendants in this case where found not guilty. In Virginia in 1998 a Black man named Garnett P. Johnson was beheaded and set on a fire by a white man. The defendant in this case was sentenced to Life imprisonment and a $100,000.00 fine. The jury, an all white jury, didn't see fit to sentence the defendant to death. The problem here is that most life sentences have a year affixed to them. In some cases a person can be releases in 15 to 20 years. The Issue here is that too often perpetrators of such crimes are given relatively light sentences, why because the punishment does not fit the crime. In 1998 why was there an all white jury in Virginia?
These kinds of crimes continue to happen and will continue to take place until we (Black People) stand up and do something about it. Until we stop allowing this country to look at us the way that they do it will continue to be the way that it is. The sad thing is that others who come into this country follow suite and treat Blacks the same way as the whites do. The only way to change peoples minds and behavior is by giving them a reason to change. Sadly enough I believe the only way to make them see that what they are doing is wrong is to enact the very crimes that they commit against us onto them. Then maybe they will start to take a harsher stance against this type of activity. As El-Hajj Malik El-Shabazz said, by any means Necessary.
