Well now the debate is on the table as to whether or not English should be the official Language of the US. Currently Twenty-seven states have official-English laws on the books. But these laws are over shadowed by the federal voter’s rights laws and others. What this means is that the legislation is on the books but we have no desire, nor backing to enforce these laws. California has had English as official language laws on the books for 20 years now, but has yet to enforce or put it into action.
As it has been said many times during the current immigration debates, all peoples coming into the US should have an expectation to learn and understand English in order to comfortably fit into our society. Immigrants for centuries now have had to learn English in order to live in this Country, even the native Americans had to learn English, so why is it now acceptable to not learn English and to make those here learn the language of other countries just so we can communicate and get along.
On the surface this is not a problem, but now there are areas where people are being fired and denied promotions because they do not speak Spanish. So see this issue as it is right now doesn’t seem that big of a deal but if it continues to go on we will see these kinds of restrictions grow and who knows you may be the next to find yourself out of a job just because you failed Spanish in High School.

Why learn English when Spanish has already been accepted as the second language of the United States (at least as we speak). Use your bank card and read the instructions at the atm; look at the instructions you receive on any household appliance, computer system, and when you call any major financial institution press 2 if you speak Spanish. How can we not expect this event to happen? The United States Congress, through so called equality in legislation, has slowly passed bills enforcing this "equality." Why chose this group and not chose the French speaking or any other large group within U. S. borders. It would make more sense if the U. S. were going to annex Mexico (food for thought). However, where we sit as black folk in the United States is wrong. I’m going to say this once… if white America can legitimize this… they can legitimize paying retribution for the crap we put up with in this country. Build a fence my @#$!!; They have the audacity to call a resident black person (through generations) from New Orleans a refugee and then have the shameless boldness to call someone who wasn’t even born in this country, who came over here illegally, an immigrant. That person is not an illegal immigrant that person is an illegal Alien and that’s the law. If you have an opportunity to speak I encourage speaking out against this insult to our ancestors. Class, race and economics have always had a place in our society. If you do have an opportunity to speak to someone who can make a difference, don’t hesitate. Remember this is now our house and anyone who wants to be a part of this family must respect the family first.
Well Said, If I knew who you were I would send a more personal response. I echo every sentiment and thought expressed in your post.
